ARCHBISHOP OF YORK
Richard Scrope – A powerful bishop, conspiring against Henry IV, but cautious
A follower of Falstaff who likes to drink
Loyal follower of Henry IV, liked by all
A servant at the inn. Helps Gadshill
A wild Scots lord, loyal to Hotspur
A fat, ageing, dishonest wit, friend of Hal, takes advantage of that friendship, but loves Hal. A reprobate Puritan.
A dim-witted waiter
A rogue and a thief.
Lady Mortimer’s father. A pompous but friendly Welshman. Claims the Welsh throne, and believes in portents. Hot tempered.
Mistress Quickly – An aging bar and brothel keeper. Good-natured but stupid.
Son of Northumberland – A loquacious, hot-tempered young man. Wants to fight and rebel.
KING HENRY IV
An aging, guilt-ridden, Machiavellian king.
Hotspur’s ever-loving wife, who puts up with his martial nonsense.
Brother of Lady Percy – Some say, the rightful King of England. Held for ransom by Glendower. Has married Glendower’s daughter.
Helped Henry IV to throne in Richard II, now wants to overthrow him.
Friend of Prince Hal and wants to take advantage of that. Likes not Falstaff.
Eldest son of Henry IV and so heir to throne. Sowing his wild oats, but wants to reform when king.
Lord John of Lancaster, son of Henry IV, Hal’s younger brother. Not so witty or sensitive to moral realities as Prince Hal.
A rebel, but a good-hearted chap.
A loyal follower of Henry IV. A messenger.
Younger brother of Northumberland, uncle to Hotspur, a devious and envious rebel. Wants to overthrow Henry IV.
