Let’s Explore Lady Macbeth for play-reading

We are surprised at the level of interest you’ve shown in play-reading. Our Facebook page now has more than 1,000 members (page likes & friends), and  in July, traffic to the web-site has doubled. Most of that comes from the US and UK, but interest is growing in Brazil, India, and the Philippines.

.

We hope some of you will try out play-reaidng of Macbeth in September, but why wait till then. Let’s start now by exploring the character of Lady Macbeth, and how she develops and changes in the play. By the way, it’s good to do this age- and gender-blind, so if you’re an old man, it’s still possible to play Lady Macbeth.

.

Lady Macbeth has two soliloquies in the play – her first scene (A1S5), where she receives a letter from Macbeth, and her sleep-walking scene (A5S1). If you read these two scenes, one straight after the other, you can compare how Lady Macbeth has changed from her first appearance to her last.

.

What I suggest you do, is the following:

  • Get together with one of your friends and at least one web browser (though two might be better so that the one not playing can read along as the soliloquy unfolds.
  • Each of you in turn read the following two scenes (click on the link to get the script in a new tab):
  • Discuss how you think Lady Macbeth has changed.

Of course, you could do this on your own, but it’s much more fun to play it out loud to someone, and then you can talk about your different perceptions after you’ve both played it.

.

After you’ve read this scene, if you’re more excited about the idea of play-reading, you might like to refresh your memory of how we do that, by reading the following posts:
