Let’s Play: Rosalind and Orlando ‘marry’ (A4S1, As You Like It – 4 players)

Play Index & Help

When A4S1 of As You Like It starts, Rosalind (disguised as a youth),  has been kept waiting by Orlando, the man she loves. She is talking to Jaques, the melancholic follower of Duke Senior. When Orlando arrives, Rosalind initially ignores him, until Jaques leaves. Then, she first of all tells him off for being late, then ‘educates’ him into the reality of love, and then persuades Celia to ‘marry’ them.

.

In our age, this ‘getting married’ looks like a game, but in Elizabethan times, it looks much more serious:

  • First, one could get married without going to church. It was only necessary for the couple to verbally commit to marry the other, in front of a witness, for them to be considered married, though it was thought desirable for the marriage to be then confirmed later in a church service.
  • Secondly, it was possible for one of the couple getting married to be ‘represented’ by someone else at the wedding, as ‘Ganymede’ represents Rosalind in Orlando’s eyes.

.

This is partly why Celia is so reluctant to ‘marry’ them, and is upset after the marriage is over.
